Even in countries with high-quality healthcare, perinatal health outcomes vary according to the migration background of mothers. In this thesis, we explored the underlying causes of these inequalities, focusing on healthcare services and migrant legal status. We surveyed postnatal mothers in Brussels to investigate their use and experiences of perinatal healthcare, and how these were affected by maternal birthplace and socioeconomic context. We also analysed population data to measure the impact of immigrants' legal status on newborn health. This work provides insights into the role of the perinatal healthcare system in social health inequalities and its interplay with factors beyond healthcare.
