Séminaire de Midi - Dimitri Renmans
Using the Realist Square (ReSq) approach to understand how health care systems and interventions work
Séminaire présenté (en anglais) par monsieur Dimitri Renmans
- PhD in Development Studies (University of Antwerp)
- Master en Sciences de la Santé Publique (ULB)
- Master of Comparative and International Politics (KU Leuven)
In this presentation I will give a relatively quick overview of a methodological approach I am developing, called the Realist Square (ReSq) approach. It is based on the principles of Bhaskar's ontological/transcendental realism, Pawson's realist evaluation science and Ragin's qualitative comparative analysis.
It uses substantive social science theories to develop initial program theories which are continuously being refined using empirical studies (incl. reviews). My aim is to show how it can be used to further our deep understanding of how health care systems work and how they can be improved. The approach does this by highlighting the combinations of conditions that trigger mechanisms that have the tendency to either contribute to or counteract the achievement of our objectives.
