How do we maintain our well-being when our health declines? While ageing is a universal process, the way individuals experience and adapt to physical health challenges varies. This doctoral research examines how people respond to the onset of functional disability, a key turning point that affects not only physical functioning but also social roles and daily life. Moving beyond traditional age-based approaches, the project adopts a time-to/from-onset perspective to better capture changes in well-being over time. Using longitudinal data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), it analyses trajectories both before and after disability onset, highlighting anticipation and adaptation processes. Through different modelling techniques, it identifies distinct trajectory patterns of resilience and their socio-economic and health-related determinants. By adopting a multidimensional view of well-being, the research provides new insights into how individuals respond to health shocks and into inequalities in ageing.
