L'Ecole de Santé publique et son centre de recherche en Epidémiologie, Biostatistique et Recherche Clinique organisent un séminaire de midi intitulé : "When Zero Events Matter: Methodological Challenges in Meta-analyses of Neonatal Mortality among LGA and Macrosomic infants in Low- and Middle-Income Countries" présenté par la Professeure Fati Kirakoya :

Assessing neonatal mortality associated with large-for-gestational-age and macrosomic births in low- and middle-income countries poses methodological challenges due to rare outcomes, frequent zero-event studies, and pronounced between-study heterogeneity. Standard approaches, including overall estimation of neonatal mortality risks, exclusion of zero-event studies, and the use of continuity corrections, may distort effect estimates, uncertainty, and interpretation. Using multi-country individual-level data from the Vulnerable Newborns Measurement Collaboration, we illustrate how alternative strategies, such as median-based summaries of risk, random-effects meta-analysis using generalized linear mixed models, and beta-binomial regression models, can provide more robust and interpretable inference. This work highlights how methodological choices critically shape conclusions about mortality risks at the upper tail of birthweight distribution in LMICs.
